Where Your Best Clientele Actually Come From

Sep 1
4 min read

Ask an owner where their best clientele came from and you’ll hear the same answer almost every time. Somebody sent them.

A person, with a name, who already trusted them and said so out loud in a room they weren’t standing in. That was the whole transaction. It happened without them, it closed faster than anything they’ve ever paid for, and the client showed up already believing.

Now ask that same owner where the money went last quarter. Right.

The formula was never a secret

Here’s what I do know after twenty years of this. There’s no secret. There’s a formula, and it’s been sitting there the whole time. You take care of people. You do what you said you’d do. You go back and tell them what came of it.

That’s the engine. That’s all of it.

And it’s slower than a card on file and a campaign that starts Monday, which is exactly why most owners drift away from it right about the time it’s starting to WERK.

What a referral costs the person who gives it

When somebody refers you, they hand you a client and they hand you their own reputation in the same motion. They’re saying, I’ll wear it if this goes badly. I’ll be the one who has to sit across from them at the next event.

Y’all understand what that costs a person?

That’s why a referral closes the way it does. The trust was already built somewhere else, by somebody else, over years, and they just lent it to you. Nothing you can buy does that. Nothing.

So when one comes in, treat it like what it is. Somebody put their name on you.

Paid attention has a job, and this isn’t it

I want to be fair here, because this gets preached badly.

Advertising can put you in front of somebody who has never heard your name. That’s real, and it’s worth paying for when you know exactly who you’re trying to reach and what you want them to do. Plenty of good businesses run on it.

What it can’t do is vouch for you. It can rent you the attention and then it hands the hard part back to you, and the hard part was always the part that decides whether they call.

So when an owner tells me the ads brought traffic and no clientele, I don’t think the ads failed, exactly. I think they did the only job they had.

Your clientele come out of the room you’re in

Here’s the part that stings a little, and then I’ll tell you why it’s good news.

People refer what they understand. If nobody in your circle has ever hired at the level you want to be hired at, they can’t send you somebody at that level. They’ll send you exactly what they know, and they’ll do it with love, and they’ll feel good about it, because to them that’s a gift and it is one.

So your referrals are a mirror of your room. Every time.

Now the good news, and I mean this. You got good. You’ve been good for a while, and the people around you would tell you the same thing if you asked them. The room is the thing that hasn’t caught up yet, and the room is the most changeable thing on the whole list. You can be in a different one by Thursday.

Four things that make you referable

None of these cost a dollar.

1. Your word holds. Say when you’ll come back to them, then come back at that time. A kept promise at twenty four hours does more for you than a scramble at two.

2. You close the loop. Somebody pours into you, sends you a name, gives you an hour. You go back and tell them what came of it. Every time. That’s the part almost nobody does, and it’s the part that keeps the door open.

3. You make it easy to say your name. Most people who want to refer you can’t, because they can’t explain what you do in one line. So give them the line. Tell them plainly who you help and what changes. Then they can hand it to somebody without getting it wrong.

4. You finish well. The end of an engagement is where the referral gets made, or quietly doesn’t. Finish the way you started.

Start here this week

Five names. That’s the assignment.

Five people who already know what you can do, who you have not closed the loop with. Not a pitch, and not a favor either. Just go back and tell them what came of the thing they did for you.

Some of them are going to be surprised you remembered. One of them is going to have somebody in mind before you’re finished talking.

Start with prayer. Then make the list.

And if you want to look at where you’re positioned right now and who’s actually in your room, book a Strategy Discovery Call. You can see how we work with owners inside our programs, or read more about who we are.

God Loves you, I love you, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Don’t be average, be world renowned.
